Similar to the recent storm swept through the northwest the prior day, City blew the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal win for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that truly announced their championship potential as they strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This result marked consecutive WSL losses for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the top team with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capacity to manage domestic and continental soccer with a small squad has been a hotly discussed issue since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always seemed this was the period that would truly test this capability. Sadly for the opposition, they looked tired throughout, the memorable win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a several changes. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all provided vigor, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no such loading concerns. The City coach made one change from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since returning from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to accumulate for Skinner and his side from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the strength from Manchester City whose dynamic forward line played with and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime initial 45 minutes display that saw them net a trio in 21 minutes.

This left the home team in a commanding position and saw the visitors all at sea. Before this match, United had conceded just six in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the face of the hosts' attacking flair.

Early Chances

The omens came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot past the post. Lauren Hemp was at the center of everything in the beginning, exploiting the room left by Riviere down the visitors' wing. Her passes were causing problems and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had multiple attacks forward, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the wings but they could not trouble the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, in the meantime, dominated possession, probing their opposition and trying to pull them out of their organization.

Triple Strike

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Fujino won the home team a corner. A delivery to the far post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was City’s 7th header of the season.

They added to their cushion with two more goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was able to maraud through the middle from central defence, the pitch widened for the hosts. The prominent Casparij received possession on the wing before sending a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third after a swift change in possession saw Lauren Hemp afforded the room to fire a shot home from range.

Final Period

The clearest substitution came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the post, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to register a one shot on target.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have increased their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. After failing to beat any team who ended above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to place them in a commanding situation after nine games.
